ALLEY BREW

Project: Café Renovation

Type: Commercial Project (Hypothetical)

Size: 61.5 sqm approx.

Location: Griffith University, Gold Coast

Year: 2024

This project creates an inclusive and sustainable environment guided by universal design principles. By ensuring equitable access and integrating eco-conscious practices, the space fosters comfort, connection, and environmental responsibility.

Process

The design process drew inspiration from Melbourne’s graffiti lanes, translating layered textures, bold colours, and evolving street art into spatial elements. Concept sketches, mood boards, and 3D modelling informed how storytelling could merge with hospitality design, resulting in an immersive café experience.

Building Codes, Safety and Access

The café design must follow Australian building codes, safety rules, and accessibility standards (AS128.1, NCC, and food industry regulations).

  • The site is a Class 6 building, with doorways suitable for wheelchair access, but uneven paths and ramps around campus need improvement.

  • Council rules require extra lighting along pathways to improve safety at night.

  • Health standards are met with food-grade equipment, and no liquor license is needed.

Site Analysis and REGULATORY Compliance

There are multiple tangible and non-tangible elements to be considered in the project’s design stage. Elements including sun and wind paths, entry/access points, and surrounding sounds.

OUTCOME

Alley Brew embraces the energy and creativity of graffiti lanes to create a café space that is bold, immersive, and full of character. The use of layered textures, rich materials, and bold colours enhances the visual experience while also fostering a deeper connection between the space and its visitors, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Every corner tells a story, transforming the café into a place where people don’t just visit, but feel part of something expressive and meaningful.
